Short answer
For most homes on a shallow well, the Red Lion RJS-100-PREM is the pick: 1 HP, cast iron, up to 23 GPM, with a 30/50 switch already mounted. The Wayne SWS100 is a cheaper cast iron option. If your water level sits close to 25 feet or drops in summer, buy a convertible pump like the Red Lion RJC-100 instead. No shallow well pump can lift water from deeper than about 25 feet.

Best overall shallow well pump
Red Lion RJS-100-PREM 1 HP Cast Iron Shallow Well Jet Pump
A cast iron 1 HP jet pump with enough flow for a full house and a hose. Cast iron is heavier and stiffer than a plastic housing, which is why many owners prefer it for a pump that runs every day. Skip it if your water is acidic (pH under about 6.5) and you won't treat it, since cast iron can rust from the inside.
- 1 HP, 115/230 V
- Up to 23 GPM (at 5 ft)
- Max suction lift 25 ft
- Cast iron body, glass-filled thermoplastic impeller
- 30/50 pressure switch installed

Best value cast iron pump
Wayne SWS100 1 HP Cast Iron Shallow Well Jet Pump
A cast iron 1 HP shallow well pump that usually costs less than the Red Lion. Wayne rates it at 630 gallons per hour (about 10.5 GPM) at 50 psi, which is honest for a real-world setting. Skip it if you need more than one shower and a hose running at once.
- 1 HP, 120/240 V
- 630 gallons per hour at 50 psi
- Max suction lift 25 ft
- Cast iron, 1-1/4" suction, 1" discharge
- 30/50 pressure switch; 3-year limited warranty

Best if your water is near 25 ft (convertible)
Red Lion RJC-100 1 HP Convertible Jet Pump
A convertible pump runs as a shallow well pump or, with the included ejector down the well, pulls from up to 90 feet. Pick it when your water level is close to the 25-foot limit. Skip it if your water sits well above 25 feet; a shallow-only pump gives more flow for the money.
- 1 HP, 115/230 V
- Up to 20 GPM
- Shallow setup under 25 ft; deep setup 25–90 ft
- Deep well ejector included
- Cast iron body, 30/50 switch

Flotec FP4012-10 1/2 HP Thermoplastic Shallow Well Jet Pump
A plastic-body pump that won't rust, which suits acidic or salty water and seasonal cabins. Flow is modest. Skip it for a family home with two bathrooms: 8 GPM at best leaves little room for two showers at once.
- 1/2 HP, 115/230 V
- 8 GPM max; 6.4 GPM at 10 ft lift
- Max suction lift 25 ft; max 77 psi
- Thermoplastic body
- 30/50 switch; 1-year limited warranty

Quick comparison
| Pump | HP | Flow (maker rating) | Body | Max lift |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Lion RJS-100-PREM | 1 | Up to 23 GPM at 5 ft | Cast iron | 25 ft |
| Wayne SWS100 | 1 | 630 GPH (10.5 GPM) at 50 psi | Cast iron | 25 ft |
| Red Lion RJC-100 | 1 | Up to 20 GPM | Cast iron | 25 ft shallow; 90 ft with ejector |
| Goulds J5S | 1/2 | 10.2 GPM at 5 ft lift, 40 psi | Cast iron | 25 ft |
| Flotec FP4012-10 | 1/2 | 8 GPM max; 6.4 at 10 ft lift | Thermoplastic | 25 ft |
| Everbilt J100A3 | 1/2 | 432 GPH (7.2 GPM) at 40 psi | Thermoplastic | 25 ft |
Makers rate flow at different lifts and pressures, so these numbers don't line up perfectly. A "max GPM" figure is measured at low lift and low pressure. The flow at 40 to 50 psi is closer to what your shower sees.
Shallow, deep or convertible: the 25-foot rule
A shallow well jet pump sits above ground and pulls water up the suction pipe. Air pressure pushes the water up as the pump lowers pressure in the pipe. That only works to about 25 feet in practice, and every pump in this guide is rated for 25 feet of lift at most.
The number that matters is the pumping water level: the distance from the pump down to the water while the pump is running. That's not the well's total depth. Water levels drop while you pump and often drop in late summer. A well that measures 18 feet to water in April can be 26 feet in August.
| Pumping water level | Pump type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 20 ft | Shallow well jet pump | Red Lion RJS-100-PREM, Wayne SWS100 |
| About 20–25 ft, or varies by season | Convertible jet pump | Red Lion RJC-100 (set up shallow, convert later) |
| 25–90 ft | Convertible or deep well jet pump with ejector | Red Lion RJC-100 in deep mode |
| Deeper, or a drilled well 4" or larger | Submersible pump | Ask a well contractor |
A convertible pump comes with an ejector that goes down the well on a second pipe. Set up as a shallow pump, it works like the others. If the water level drops later, you add the ejector instead of buying a new pump.
How to choose a shallow well pump
1. Size the flow, not the horsepower
Count what runs at the same time: showers, a washer, a hose. Then compare pumps on flow at 40 to 50 psi and at your lift. Goulds' published data for the 1/2 HP J5S shows how much lift matters:
| J5S suction lift | GPM at 30 psi | GPM at 40 psi | GPM at 50 psi |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 ft | 16.5 | 10.2 | 5.0 |
| 15 ft | 12.5 | 8.0 | 3.6 |
| 25 ft | 8.6 | 6.2 | 1.3 |
At 25 feet and 50 psi, a 1/2 HP pump barely moves water. Goulds' 1 HP J10S still makes 10.4 GPM at that same point. If your water is deep in the shallow range, or you want 40/60 pressure, step up to 1 HP.
2. Cast iron or thermoplastic
- Cast iron (Red Lion RJS, Wayne SWS100, Goulds J5S): heavier and stiffer. It's the traditional choice for a pump that runs every day. It can rust inside if your water is acidic, so check your pH first.
- Thermoplastic (Flotec FP4012, Everbilt J100A3): won't rust, lighter, and usually cheaper. A plastic housing is less forgiving of freezing or over-tightened fittings. Flotec backs the FP4012-10 for 1 year. Wayne lists 3 years on the SWS100, and Red Lion lists 3 years on its RJS-50-PREM.
3. Check the pipe sizes
Most shallow well jet pumps here use a 1-1/4 inch suction and a 1 inch discharge. Don't neck the suction pipe down to a smaller size. A restricted suction line cuts flow and can make the pump lose prime.
4. Plan for what's in the water
Shallow wells, sand points and dug wells pick up more surface water than deep drilled wells. That means more sediment and a higher risk of coliform bacteria. Put a foot valve with a screen on the suction line, and a sediment filter after the tank. Test the water once a year (here's what to test).
Mistakes to avoid
- Measuring the well instead of the water. Measure to the water while pumping, in the dry season.
- Buying max GPM. Compare flow at 40 to 50 psi and your lift.
- Skipping the foot valve or check valve. Without one, the pump loses prime every time it stops.
- Running the pump dry to prime it. Fill the pump case with water through the priming plug before the first start. Running dry can wreck the seal in seconds.
- Leaving it unprotected in winter. A pump in an unheated well house needs heat or draining.
- Ignoring the pressure tank. A jet pump with no working tank short-cycles. Set the tank's air charge 2 psi below the switch's cut-in.
Once the pump is running, a whole-house filter matched to your test handles iron, smell and sediment.
Questions well owners ask
What is the best shallow well pump?
For most homes, a 1 HP cast iron jet pump like the Red Lion RJS-100-PREM. It moves up to 23 GPM at low lift and comes with a 30/50 switch. The Wayne SWS100 costs less, and the Flotec FP4012-10 suits cabins and corrosive water.
How deep can a shallow well pump pull water?
About 25 feet from the pump to the water while pumping. Every pump in this guide is rated for 25 feet of lift at most. Deeper water needs a convertible or deep well jet pump with an ejector, or a submersible.
What size shallow well pump do I need?
Size by flow at your lift and pressure. A 1/2 HP pump suits a cabin or small home with shallow water. If water is 15 to 25 feet down, or you want 40/60 pressure, choose 1 HP. Goulds' data shows its 1/2 HP J5S drops to 1.3 GPM at 25 feet and 50 psi.
Is a cast iron or plastic jet pump better?
Cast iron is heavier and is the traditional choice for daily use. Thermoplastic won't rust and costs less. If your water is acidic, plastic avoids internal rust, or you can correct the pH first.
What's the difference between a shallow well and a convertible jet pump?
A shallow well pump only works with water within about 25 feet. A convertible pump comes with an ejector that goes down the well, letting it pull from deeper; Red Lion rates the RJC-100 to 90 feet.
Why does my shallow well pump keep losing prime?
Usually an air leak on the suction side, a failed foot valve, or water dropping below the pump's 25-foot limit. Check fittings for leaks and measure the water level while the pump runs.
