Manganese in well water: black stains and how to remove it
Buying through our links can earn us a commission at no cost to you. How that works.
Short answer
Manganese causes black or brown stains and a bitter metallic taste above 0.05 ppm, EPA's secondary standard. At higher levels it's also a health concern, especially for infants; EPA's lifetime health advisory is 0.3 ppm. The same oxidizing filters that remove iron handle manganese: the SpringWell WS treats up to 1 ppm.
What the levels mean
| Manganese | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 0.05 ppm | Below EPA's staining and taste guideline |
| 0.05–0.3 ppm | Black staining and taste; treat for comfort |
| Over 0.3 ppm | Above EPA's lifetime health advisory; treat, and use a different source for infant formula until you do |

Manganese oxidizes more slowly than iron, so filters need the right pH. Many need water above about pH 7 to remove it well. Check your pH in the same test. If it's low, raise it first; see low pH.
Questions well owners ask
Is manganese in well water harmful?
Low levels are a nuisance. Above EPA's 0.3 ppm lifetime health advisory, long-term drinking is a concern, and infants are more sensitive. Use another water source for formula until it's treated.
Do black stains always mean manganese?
Usually, though some bacteria and fixtures can also cause dark deposits. A lab test confirms it.
