Best well water test kit: lab panels vs home strips
Buying through our links can earn us a commission at no cost to you. How that works.
Short answer
Buy a certified lab panel, not just strips, when you're about to spend $1,000 or more on treatment. A good well panel covers bacteria, nitrate, metals (iron, manganese, arsenic, lead), hardness and pH. Tap Score's Essential Well Water Test covers 54 analytes for about $209. Strips are fine for a quick hardness or iron check between lab tests.

What a good well panel includes
| Group | Must include | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bacteria | Total coliform, E. coli | Safety; decides whether you need UV |
| Nitrogen | Nitrate, nitrite | Infant safety |
| Metals | Iron, manganese, arsenic, lead, copper | Iron filter sizing; health limits |
| Minerals | Hardness, TDS | Softener sizing; UV pretreatment |
| Chemistry | pH | Decides whether you need a neutralizer first |
Hydrogen sulfide is hard to measure by mail because the gas escapes. If you smell rotten eggs, mention it to the lab or use an on-site test.
Strips vs lab
Strips give a range by color, like "iron 0.3 to 1 ppm". That's enough to know a problem exists, not enough to size an iron filter rated "up to 3 ppm" versus "up to 7 ppm". Use the lab number for buying decisions.
Questions well owners ask
Are cheap well water test kits accurate?
Strips are rough screens. They're useful for tracking a known problem, like hardness after a softener, but not for picking a system.
