Iron filter for well water: how to stop orange stains for good

Buying through our links can earn us a commission at no cost to you. How that works.

Short answer

Pick the iron filter by your lab number. Under 3 ppm with no smell, a cartridge system like the iSpring WGB32BM works. From 3 to 7 ppm, or with any rotten-egg smell, use an air-injection oxidation filter like the SpringWell WS. Above 7 ppm, add chlorine or peroxide injection ahead of the filter. EPA's taste-and-staining limit for iron is 0.3 ppm.

Signs you have iron

EPA sets a secondary standard of 0.3 mg/L (the same as 0.3 ppm) for iron. It isn't a health limit. It's the level where staining and taste start. Most well owners who notice orange stains test well above it.

Match the filter to your iron level

Iron levelOther conditionsWhat worksTypical cost
Under 0.3 ppm—No iron treatment needed$0
0.3 to 3 ppmNo smell, manganese under 1 ppmCartridge system with an iron-reducing stageAbout $650 + yearly cartridges
Up to 7 ppmSulfur smell up to 8 ppm, manganese up to 1 ppmAir injection oxidation (AIO) filter with greensandFrom about $1,600
Over 7 ppmOr iron bacteria slimeChemical oxidation (chlorine or hydrogen peroxide injection) plus a backwashing filterUsually a pro install; get quotes

Two details change the answer. If your lab shows iron bacteria or you see slime, cartridges clog fast and you need oxidation. If your pH is under about 6.5, iron filters work poorly and corrode plumbing, so add a pH neutralizer first.

Our picks for iron

  1. Best for most wells with iron: up to 7 ppm

    SpringWell WS Well Water Filter

Air injection oxidation: an air pocket at the top of the tank oxidizes dissolved iron, sulfur and manganese so a greensand bed can trap them. It backwashes itself on a timer, with no chemicals or salt.

    • Iron up to 7 ppm
    • Hydrogen sulfide up to 8 ppm
    • Manganese up to 1 ppm
    • WS1: 12 GPM, 1–4 baths
    • WS4: 20 GPM, 4+ baths
    • Lifetime warranty, 6-month money-back

  2. Best budget pick for light iron under 3 ppm

iSpring WGB32BM 3-Stage Whole House Filter

Three cartridges in housings: sediment, carbon block, then an iron and manganese reducing cartridge. No backwash and no drain line, but you replace cartridges about once a year.

    • Iron up to 3 ppm
    • Manganese up to 1 ppm
    • 15 GPM
    • 5-micron sediment + carbon + iron cartridge
    • ~100,000 gallons per stage

Why air injection beats cartridges at higher levels

Cartridge iron filters trap iron until the media is spent. At 1 ppm a cartridge can last months. At 5 ppm it can clog in weeks. An air-injection filter turns dissolved iron into particles, catches them in a mineral bed, and flushes them to a drain every night. The media lasts for years, and there's nothing to buy each month.

The trade-off is installation. AIO filters need a drain line for the backwash and enough water flow from your pump to rinse the bed. Check that your pump can supply the backwash rate printed in the manual before you buy.

Can a water softener remove iron?

A softener removes small amounts of dissolved iron, but iron coats the resin over time and cuts its capacity. If you have iron and hard water, put the iron filter first and the softener after it. See filter and softener combos.

Before you buy

  1. Get a lab test that reports iron, manganese, pH, hardness and hydrogen sulfide. Compare test kits.
  2. Enter the numbers in the system matcher to see the full treatment order.
  3. Check your pump's flow rate (GPM) and your number of bathrooms to pick the tank size.

Questions well owners ask

How do I remove iron from well water naturally?

There's no chemical-free shortcut for high iron except oxidation. Air injection uses only air to oxidize iron so a filter bed can catch it, which is why most well owners choose it.

Is iron in well water dangerous?

Iron at typical well levels isn't a health hazard. EPA treats it as an aesthetic problem with a 0.3 ppm guideline. The real cost is stained fixtures, clogged plumbing and ruined laundry.

Why is my water clear from the tap but orange later?

That's dissolved (ferrous) iron. It oxidizes when it meets air in the glass. It still needs an iron filter; a sediment filter alone won't catch it.

How long does an iron filter last?

Air-injection greensand media typically lasts many years; SpringWell rates its WS media for 10+ years. Cartridge iron filters last months to a year depending on iron level and water use.
